Remote Control of Mining Machinery: When the Cab Is Off-Limits

Some places are off-limits for people. An unstable bench. A potential collapse zone. A sector next to blasting. A damaged structure that has to be dismantled.
The machinery still has to work there, otherwise production stops. The dilemma is old, and it has an engineering answer: the operator sits somewhere safe, the machine works somewhere dangerous.
What the system consists of
The machine gets actuators on joysticks, pedals and implements, plus controllers and cameras. The operator works at a console with monitors — in the control room or a mobile station, hundreds of metres or kilometres away.
The bottleneck of the whole scheme is latency. If video and commands lag, work is impossible: the bucket misses, cycles get wasted, accident risk grows. So we engineer the radio link for the specific site, with coverage analysis and redundancy. This is not the part to save money on.
Where it is used
- Work near unstable pit walls and in potential collapse zones.
- Dismantling damaged structures and clearing rockfalls.
- Areas with dust, gas or radiation where people should not stay.
- Severe weather that would otherwise stop the work entirely.
An honest word on productivity
At first, a console operator is slower than one in the cab. Adaptation takes weeks, and the first days can be rough — better to expect that upfront.
But the equation is simple. Slower work in a zone where a person cannot go at all beats stopped production. And it beats risking a life by a margin that is not worth discussing.
With good cameras, a well-designed console and a stable link, experienced operators reach 85–95% of their usual pace. After that the gap mostly disappears.
We design remote control systems for a specific machine and task: survey the site, model the radio coverage, install the hardware and train the operators. Tell us what machinery you have and where it needs to work — we will tell you what is realistic.
